The only significant summer I did anything was my summer after Senior Year. I participated in a leadership development program during the Fall semester of my senior year and obtained a paid summer internship at a national retail company during the summer before college.

You should definitely do some interesting volunteer work. Working at the local hospital isn't cutting it anymore. Try doing habitat for humanity, or participate in a relief effort for some international cause, like AIDS or natural disasters.

You should also look into doing some internships if possible. Museums and non-for-profits offer internships for high school students who are motivated enough to apply.

During my summers, I worked and volunteered. I believe that most schools would understand a student's need to financially support themselves and/or their family if their volunteer work is not as stellar as their actual job work.

I think you should consider what sort of things interest you. It might be a little early, but think about what you would like to major in in college. Try to find extra-curricular opportunities that match those interests. It would be most beneficial for you to pursue activities that generally interest you.

I participated in the Red Cross for much of high school and even in college. Go by your interests. If you want to go into actuarial science (noticed this in one of the other forum topics), try volunteering for an accounting firm to see if you can get some experience there.

I spent the summer after freshman year taking geometry so that I could get ahead in math in high school. I also worked part-time at a job I would end up continuing all throughout high school. After sophomore year I spent the summer studying the Avante-Garde and studio photography in Paris, France. I also worked at the same job. After junior year I did Brown University's pre-college program, Summer@Brown. I believe that while it is very important to participate in activities related to your interests, it is also important to participate in some of the same activities over the course of all four years of high school. Colleges like to see commitment and continuity on applications.

The summer of my sophomore year, I volunteered at a hospital, which helped me realize in the long-run that I didn't want to pursue medicine. The summer of my junior year, I enrolled in the Stanford Summer Program. The summer program didn't really help me with admissions, but it was one of the best experiences of my life and helped me get a sense of how college life is like.
